frozen warnings

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.

J.R.R. Tolkien (b. 3 january 1892 -1973) author, poet, philologist, professor

the freeze is back - we had a very mild finish to 2010 and start of the new year here on the north coast. on saturday, the temperature actually hit 60 degrees! crazy! who doesn't believe in global climate change.

although not prone to new year resolutions, I find myself drawn to making a few this year. I'd share them but I'm too superstitious and believe, as with wishes, if I tell them they won't happen. I will hint and let on that one concerns the bloggyhood.

see you around - off to start attending to a few of those resolutions.

the mouse wishes everyone a most auspicious, healthy, and happy 2011!

Wow! That does look a bit chilly.

No resolutions here; it's never been a tradition in my family, and my real New Year is Samhain, which doesn't include resolutions, either.

Have a great 2011!

Or a net cast over the ice.

There's a layer of ice across most of the pond behind my house here in the Puget Sound area. It's been below freezing for several days -- but bright blue skies are making my heart soar!

Happy 2011 to all!
We are promised snow here tomorrow so you might get some too Meri!

I couldn't wait to page down and see what that photo was! Lake Erie shore..that is just amazing. Yes, I think a chenile bedspreads is the perfect description!

We had that crazy 60 degrees, too! Melted away all of our snow! Now it's cold again!

Amazing photo - and I just love that poem. A few chilly flakes of snow drifted down in south east London today from the grey skies, but that's all. So far...

this just in for all those curious cats and mice who love to know interesting tidbits and factoids.

i just learned from my buddy danny that the ice seen in the photo is called pancake ice. danny should know - not only is he's in the coast guard (and if you know anything about the coast guard in the great lakes, you know they are very, very familiar with ice and breaking it!!) danny also hails from a state (not ohio) that is surrounded by great lakes and is renown for its bodies of water!

thanks danny! those curious about pancake ice can read more about it here and here

(i like the second here, a brief article written by polar scientists)
