he's gone

Constantly choosing the lesser of two evils is still choosing evil.

Jerry Garcia (August 1, 1942 – August 9, 1995) musician, artist, songwriter

yesterday afternoon I found myself at the cleveland metroparks zoo with some friends (4 of which were kids 5 and under) in order to keep up our strength we had to make a pit stop for some ice cream. I would have preferred the zoo dish up our own local mitchell brothers ice cream, but since they don't, serving ben and jerry's ice cream, I guess is the next best thing.

in honor of what would have been jerry's 68th birthday, I choose a cone of cherry garcia. my friendly server (below) didn't have a clue that august 1st was jerry's birthday - in fact, given the expression on his face when I mentioned jerry, I doubt he knew who jerry garcia was - I didn't ask. in spite of the seeming lack of jerry awareness, I did encourage the stand to offer everyone a discount on cherry garcia ice cream today.

although the young man dishing up the ice cream seemed fairly naive about jerry, someone at the zoo definitely does appreciate jerry - outside of the rain forest exhibit is plaque sharing some jerry wisdom.

I didn't realize today was Jerry's birthday; thanks for the reminder!

You'd think somebody working at Ben & Jerry's would at least know who Jerry Garcia was. Don't they do a new employee orientation? Sheesh! Heh, heh.

Young kids probably wouldn't know who Jerry Garcia was. They listen to such different music now. You are making me hungry for some ice cream!

A kid in a tie-dye who doesn't know Jerry! Talk about bad parenting! No one will ever be able to accuse me of neglect on that score: We took our kids to see the Dead when they were 10 and 8 (on the theory that we didn't know how long Jerry would last).

Oh, Grateful Dead.....Somebody was mocking on me (not alone, but with Normunds Kozlovs from Latvia) because I did not know anything about Grateful Dead 12 years ago... I felt so embarrassed that decided to learn about Grateful Dead.
