did you know that in the united states june has two flag days? there is june 14th, the traditional flag day and also on june 25th, there is another often overlooked flag day.
on june 25th 1978, the rainbow flag (which was designed and created by gilbert baker and jomar teng) flew for the first time in the san francisco gay freedom day parade.
according to the portal of all knowledge (pak) the original flag had eight stripes instead of the six that we most often encounter now. when baker and teng created the flag they assigned a special meaning to each color :
hot pink: sexuality |
red: life |
orange: healing |
yellow: sunlight |
green: nature |
turquoise: magic/art |
indigo: serenity/harmony |
violet: spirit |
given the meanings, I think maybe we should return to an eight color flag!! afterall, what's life without sexuality, magic and art!

I totally agree. Thanks for the history lesson. I didn't know that the colors had significance other that to support diversity.
Yeah..I definitely agree. Besides it looks prettier with all the colors. I didn't have a clue about the color meanings until this post... so thanks.
Thanks for the vid. I love that song.
Hmmmm...who knew?
Oh wow, I didn't know anything about the meanings behind the colors! Great post :)

I had no idea! Thanks for sharing this information. Now I just need to slip it into casual conersation so I can appear smart. Haha. xoxo
I didn't even know there was one flag day, never mind two. Over here nobody is quite sure what our flag is - which, I must confess, is the way I like it.
