hey, hey

People who know little are usually great talkers, while men who know much say little.

Jean Jacques Rousseau (b. 28 june 1712 - 1778)

is anyone else other than me in shock that in a few days time it will be JULY?

yesterday I rode up to michigan (and back) with a friend who was dropping off her son for summer camp. trent will be spending the next few weeks at circle pines, a camp that has been around since 1938 - what a cool camp. the only sleepover summer camps I attended were two very exclusive camps run for me and my sibs at nana's house or grandpap and grandmam's home.

although summers with my extended family in pennsylvania were fun - we never had special musical guests. can you imagine being a kid at camp and have pete seeger and "big bill" broonzy singing for you and with you! not only that, but according to the camp website, "big bill" was part of the summer camp staff; what was that I was saying about circle pines being a cool camp!

the original photo was snapped in 1957 and the letter to the camp from pete is dated august 1, 1998. in the letter pete reflects on his visit to the camp and playing with blues great "big bill" broonzy. according to the letter, "big bill" had surgery the following day and never sang again. sadly, by august of the following year "big bill" was dead from "complications of cancer."

since time is doing a number on me (projects, deadlines) no time to rattle on.....but I am ecstatic that the heat wave we've been in the midst of for the last week seems to be dissipating - today's high along the north coast is low 80s and tomorrow low 70s - be still my heart!!

historical footage of "big bill" broonzy playing 'hey, hey'

here's a youtube vid with audio of pete and "big bill" playing "the lion is sleeping" - what do you want to bet that they played this tune at circle pines in 1957!

And I welcome July ( only as long as we can get some rain! )

I can't believe it's almost July as well! WHERE did the time go?!

My Bear goes off to camp in two weeks. I JUST now got all the paperwork sent that they need. And here I thought I had more time...

as usual.
:-)

Thanks for the video! Fab!

Our humidity is supposed to break tomorrow (Tuesday) night, getting down into the mid 50s, and then Wednesday through the 4th of July weekend is supposed do be drier and more moderate. I can't wait!

I wonder what it was like to have Bill Broonzy as a camp counselor?

Was I the only kid who hated summer camp, but was forced to go? Maybe it was because it was church camp, full of hell-fire-and-brimstone preaching?

What a great video. What great talent.

Drove to Michigan? Around here it is miles to everywhere (except Mexico).

No, I am definitely NOT ready for it to be July already!

I loved going to summer camp. But no way was it as cool as this one!
