z is for zebra

around here we don't have any zebras but we do have zebra swallowtail butterflies! in the days to come we will be seeing fewer and fewer butterflies. in fact, come to think of it I haven't seen a butterfly in a while. those that migrate have probably already passed through and those that don't migrate have already done whatever they do when the temperatures drop.

z is also for zeppelin.

some friends recently purchased an old house in need of much renovation. when they pulled up the carpet in the living room, underneath glued to the hardwood floors were sheets of newspapers from the 1930s. above is a notice which advertises 2-1/2 days to europe. if you look close you will see the ad is for passage on the hindenburg - a commercial airship, or zeppelin. between march, 1936 until it's tragic last flight in may 1937 the hindenburg completed 17 round trips across the atlantic ocean.

old ads and articles are fascinating. I think examining newspapers can provide a wonderful view into the zeitgeist of the times.

well all things must end. it took a little longer to get from a to z this trip than the first time the mouse did the alphabet journey; but it was just as much fun.

the alphabet certainly is a lot of fun. fans of star trek and/or jean-luc picard (aka patrick stewart), may particularly enjoy this vid:

Those ads are wonderful. I love finding them to since they tell you so much about where people were in their daily lives back then. I hope they can be preserved after the new floor is put in.

We were just talking about the word Zeitgeist today!!! how weird!

Time Spirit! (the old ads do capture it.)

That butterfly photograph is fantastic. The old newspaper was pretty swell, too.

I love old newspapers and you're right about getting the feel of an era from them.

I have so enjoyed your alphabet posts. I'm just wondering what happens next -- do you start at the very beginning all over again or do you have something new in store for Mouse readers?

My little wallet is indeed perfect! TY and hugs!

Z is also for zany.....which holds alot of weight these days.

Always interesting to find old newspapers.

Am reading a book called: Double Fold and am not too surprised by some of the information mentioning the Library Of Congress among others and their handling (or throwing away) of many old newspapers! ; (

Nicely done and great series ; )

Do you know what flower the butterfly is perched on -- the orange one? I used to see it growing wild in Florida and I never knew what it was.

The Hindenburg -- yikes!

ca - "bang" is that in reference to the hindenburg explosion of patrick stewart's song! tee hee!!

happy canadian thanksgiving -5 expect that is celsius which is still COLD (low 20s in F) brrrrr!

gary - youtube is amazing!

junk - my friends had me come over and take photos of all the sheets. unfortunately because the newspapers were glued the only way to preserve the paper would be to pull up the floor! so photos are the next best thing. I liked the comics and the ads best. although the anti-fascist editorial was interesting.

squirrel - zeitgeist is a wonderful word, but I found it hard to actually include in a sentence...

megan - until the next abc journey - a midwinter's entertainment I expect!

susan - I wish the ad for the hindenburg was crisper - but it was pretty small.

z - yes it is!!!!

dd - hope all is well on the other side of the pond with you!

reya - glad you got it up. I've long had a 'thing' for patrick stewart! what a voice!

barbara - congrats on winning the train station contest, happy you like the prize!

coffee - zany! great word and with right placement a fantastic scrabble word!! I will have to look for that book - thanks.

rlb - zut! in h.s. french class I was quite fond of saying 'zut alors!'..... thanks it was fun.

tut - how funny that you mentioned numbers I was planning on wrapping up october with a random numbers series called 'the number of the day'

steve - I think the flower is some type of milkweed - sometimes this color milkweed is called 'blood flower' but there's lots of other common names....milkweed is very attractive to butterflies and is a wildflower.
