peace, love, and understanding

A single rose can be my garden...a single friend, my world.
Leo Buscaglia (1924-1998) educator, writer, and advocate of love

tonight is the opening night for the democratic national convention (dnc). word has it that ted kennedy flew to denver last night in order to attend, but he is not scheduled to speak. however, conventions are always good for a few surprises, I hope ted will have the strength to make it up to the podium. even if kennedy doesn't talk, I look forward to seeing ken burns documentary on senator kennedy which will debut tonight during the dnc broadcast.

today is elvis costello's birthday - for curious cats elvis was born in london in 1954 and no his given name isn't elvis nor is it costello.

to celebrate elvis' birthday and with hopes that the activities in denver will set the stage so we can go from having a president who is an abomination to an obamanation, here's elvis and the attractions classic (what's so funny 'bout) peace, love and understanding in a creative collage of contemporary images:

petite souris: Americans aren't the only ones placing some hope on a change of direction in the White House. Good thoughts going out from Graulhet to Denver and to all our American friends

looking forward to Denver and beyond!

I went through an Elvis Costello phase--what's his real name?

Here we go. The DNC.

Despite the fact that Ted has been involved in controversy, I think it would be very moving and poignantly historic if he were to go up to the podium. The roar of the crowd due to his recent battles with cancer would be astonishing.

And besides, he has already been through so much with his family.

rlb - thanks. too bad the world can't vote! I'm hopeful that we will have an obamanation.... we can't even think of 4 years of mcnasty

ched - elvis' given name is declan patrick macmanus... quite lovely

wat - let the games begin! ted has and continues to do much to help insure that there are safety nets in our country... he is a human, and as such is complicated's a tragedy how the media sensationalizes everything and remove people for the context of their lives, etc. grok?

this country will impeach someone for getting a blow job but not a president who invades a sovereign country on false charges and is essentially a war criminal (cf the condoning of torture, wire tapping, etc. etc) .... what is wrong with this picture? yikes, I fear a rant.

I love Elvis Costello! Thanks for the song.

For the first time in my life, I am excited about the convention. Wish you could be here on Thursday when friends and I watch the speech together.

It's such an exciting moment in time. Woo hoo!!

And oh yes, I remember the days when I was very into Costello music - takes me back now... Funny, I always thought he was Irish.

I'm so glad Ched asked that question, and you had the answer at hand! I was wondering the same thing!

Ted was great last night, as was Michelle. I'm enthused, and hope Hillary gets her chickens in the right coop (or something; I lost my analogy).

If my name were Declan, I wouldn't change it to Elvis.

I was glad Teddy got up there. Ken Burns' commentary afterward was pretty cool too.

reya - I don't think I've ever been so excited (and positive) about a convention - would be fun to watch it with you & your buds....but that gives me a great idea for a wee party for thursday - time to make some calls!

av - he is of irish descent - look at his given name!!

steve - thank goodness for wiki and the portal of all knowledge!!

tut - teddy was TERRIFIC....I cried many times last night...and I just love jimmy - always have always will. I hope hillary takes a lesson from teddy and becomes the NEXT BEST SENATOR EVER....since 1980 teddy has devoted himself to the service of all people, especially the poor, elderly, disenfranchised and all groups needing a champion. bless teddy and here's hoping for a medical miracle!

I look forward to hillary's talk tonight and to all the other speeches....I also thought jesse jr. was very very good last night and michelle, she was AWESOME.... look forward to this power couple at 1600 pennsylvania avenue!

Ted Kennedy is my hero! He embodied everything this country should stand for. I'm amazed that he was able to pull off such a speech in his state of health.

Great quote. My friend Joy has been trying to get me to read Leo Buscaglia for a while. She even gave me one of his books but I haven't read it yet. I should really follow her advice on this one - she is the one who turned me on to Joseph Campbell.

This quote is also reminiscent of how The Little Prince feels about his rose.
