a note from the road

thanks for the comments and emails sending birthday wishes to mouse's mama! she is most touched!

I don't generally post from the road, but I least I forget I have a mystery that needs solving and am stumped - maybe there's a mouse reader who can solve the mystery -- it is quite fun to play basil the great mouse detective. help us pinpoint the location of where exactly in southern california the 1957 photo was taken - the statue provides a clue, but neither my mom nor dad can remember who the statue was of or exactly where we were standing. and it's driving my mom nuts, now you know I come by my curiosity quite naturally!

I pose that the statue appears to be some explorer - but which? if can help us identify exactly where we were sitting, that would be wonderful and a wee prize from the mouse will be sent to the lucky winner. (elephant, my mom swears we didn't make it to SF until 1964, so it couldn't have been the columbus statue in front of the coit tower - and I check out that statue and the legs are all wrong)

have a great weekend!

p.s. the link to the clip of dorothy from the wizard of oz was fixed

This is odd. I'm absolutely certain it's the same guy in http://travel.webshots.com/photo/1302903858054388862GubFdp
but where did the building go to?
I'm sure it's the statue of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in San Diego but the background is different. I may be halfway there...

Okay, I think I know, I think I know.
"1949 - 15-foot statue of Cabrillo, originally intended for display at San Francisco world's fair in 1940, is installed next to the lighthouse, later moved to present site near Visitor Center."
Maybe?

I conclude that I think Point Loma, then, is where the picture was taken, before the statue was moved.
I keep commenting incessantly because
1) I wasn't very sure in the beginning
2) I love a challenge
3) I'm also curious
4) I love doing research of any sort
5) My Spouse is going away to Sweden today and I'm trying hard to distract myself from a potentially empty house. The first day is always the most difficult.

Thanks for the diversion! I'll go and do some vacuuming now.

te!!!! that is IT - you are great and the lucky winner!! you make a greatbasil! email me your snail mail address (my address is kyanoshik at gmail dot com) and within a month a little something from the magical mouse studio will arrive at your home!

the picture I posted was taken in 1957 so of course over the last 51 years (eh gads I'm old) things have changed!!!!

it has all come back to mouse's mom now and she's reflecting fondly on our visit to pointloma - we lived quite close on la dorna drive in san diego near the university!

Well, I think I can automatically exclude myself from this competition, but I hope some great mouse detective will be able to solve the mystery!

kim yesterday was great. I've never been so silly in a botanical garden before, but maybe we can be silly together in Kew some day?
