blue sunday

May you have warm words on a cold evening, a full moon on a dark night and a smooth road all the way to your door.

This Day in History
First Mickey Mouse Comic Strip Released (1930)
Mickey Mouse's first incarnation of sorts was as Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, created by Walt Disney for Universal Studios. When Disney was fired for asking for a bigger budget to produce Oswald cartoons, he created Mickey Mouse to keep his company afloat. Mickey was somewhat mischievous in early cartoons, but later evolved into a well-meaning Everyman. Today, Mickey is one of the most recognized symbols of American culture. More

Your post illustrates the conflict of modern Capitalized, MacDonaldlization of our times. The irish street shows so much character, whimsical painted storefronts which gives a flavour of the store and to the town...whereas increasingly we homegenize our culture and our cities and our lives by big corporations standardizing the look of communities and selling the same products.

But you know sometimes mass corporate icons are great...we would all miss good old Mickey, Minnie and friends.

Happy birthday to Mickey. Wow, 1930? That mouse is OLD.

Walt Disney went to school at the Kansas City Art Institute, where I studied in the 1970's. The rumor was that he was quite a party guy. You'd have to be doing some kind of semi-hallucinogenic substance to come up with Mickey Mouse, don't you think?

Boy, that Walt Disney was a true visionary genius. He created such an icon, and he couldn't have even known then how huge an impact he was going to have upon the whole world: THE DISNEY EMPIRE.

Now of course, there's lots of criticism of the company and its gargantuan grip on the planet, but Walt started it off with all the best intentions of course.
