both sides now

another university circle walkabout, the route is different from last friday's stroll. I finished up at work and found myself with a free hour. I was meeting e after she got off work, we had a gallucci's run to do! with this gift of an hour I decided spend it with some 'modern masters,' the current exhibit at the cleveland museum of art. great show, it leaves january 13th just in case you find yourself in the university circle neighborhood with time on your hands.

Art is a harmony that runs parallel to nature - what is one to think of those imbeciles who say that the artist is always inferior to nature.
Paul Cezanne written in 1897 in a letter to a young artist.

Hmm, I'm not sure I'd want to compare artists with nature - two different things entirely! :-)

Great images!

Mr. Cezanne,

Ahem ... artists are part of the natural world, neither inferior nor superior. Get a grip, sir.

the cezanne quote came from the 'modern masters' exhibition - I interpreted it as cezanne saying precisely that we ought not compare artists and nature - that neither is inferior/superior to the other but are both out there doing the beautiful things they do - and these words I think were intended to encourage a young struggling artist...

interesting how each of us uses our own 'lens' and comes away from a passage or an image with a different interpretation - like beauty, meaning is in the eye of the beholder. n'est-ce pas?
